Are 2x12 Hiwatt Fane enough ?

Post by Dr.Bre »

Hello !

I recently got 2 hiwatt fane from early 70's. one had a cone job done professionaly and the other is in original shape.

I wonder if two of them would be enough to handle my 74' dr504 ??

I play usualy very loud.... master 11 o'clock and bricked preamps at 3-4 o'clock....

lot of fuzz and middy overdrive too.

im afraid for the speakers a bit, they are old and i really dont want to damage them.
Offcourse im in hunt for two more but for now i have to play with two of them.

if not enough, wich speaker do you recomend to put together with them but not to dominate to much over the fanes.

Thank you !! :D

I hate to blow vintage speakers, so I typically use a safety factor of 2 when determining working capacity.

That means, I'd consider your pair of 122231's "safe" at 50 watts total. If you're driving your DR504 hard - and pushing it with pedals, it's probably putting out more than 50 watts RMS.

My recommendation would be to exhibit some restraint until you had another pair of speakers over which to distribute the load.

+1. The one with the original cone is not going to tolerate a lot of abuse.

It all sounds wonderful until you get a sniff of toasted voice coil.
You can almost feel the current flowing
You can almost see the circuits blowing
