Fane speaker out of Orange any good?
Hi everybody. I have this orig. mid 70ies HIWATT 4 X 12" cab. without speakers that has been sitting around my stuff for years. Some Internet buddy, a member of my Fbook Group "Telecaster Group" is parting out his mid 70ies Orange cab. speakers. I have a row of amps that I call my own, but no HIWATT so far. I was wondering if a Fane cab. would nicely match w. some other amp. than a HIWATT.
However it would be nice to get this HIWATT cab of mine back to orig. business.
I've read my way through threads and vido clips from here and there and like always it all melt down to personal preference.
The seller told that it is out of his Orange cab. and that he feels that they nicely push the mid range,...but well you know.
As I'm no expert and even not very experienced with too many speaker models I'd like to ask you if the speaker I'm showing by any means does make sense for my HWatt cab. Here's what I'm about to buy,...not sure

Welcome to The Vintage HIWATT Forum!
HIWATT Fanes are eq'd pretty evenly, if this one "pushes the mids" than it will be considerably different from any of the HIWATT models.
The magnet looks quite small too, not typical of a HIWATT Fane.

Can't quite read the code on yours, but it appears as though the model number end with a "4"? Do these have aluminum dust caps?
I've got a pair of similar looking model 12557 Fanes. They're good sounding speakers but, as Dr.HI-TONE pointed out, not typical of Hiwatt Fanes. To my ears, they have more chime and less thump. Have to be mindful of how much wattage is pumping into those.
As you pointed out, it all boils down to what sounds good to you.

Re: Fane speaker out of Orange any good?
I only have this pic at this time. I just wrote to the seller asking him a row of questions. I'm not sure if he can answer all that but I will see what he comes up with. As for the sound of these speakers I'm really curious to know.
As I said, I don't have a HIWATT at this time and I'm currently not in the position to buy one. Whatever Fane is going to sound like w. my cab, all I hope is that it will not sound shrill or too dull. For my guitars, I'm using a 1969 Marshall Super Bass 100, a Fender Pro Sonic (not to be confused w. the Super sonic) and a Rivera Venus 5 head. I also have a 1969 Marshall Super Bass 100 4 X 12" cab (Green Backs) and a Marshall 4 X 10 G10 (?) closed cab.
The HIWATT will hopefully become a nice different addition to my rig.

If they're anything like the ones I have, you should be o.k.. I would treat them like greenbacks, though, and not run more than 25 watts per speaker.GoldTopHeaven wrote:Whatever Fane is going to sound like w. my cab, all I hope is that it will not sound shrill or too dull.

.
Meanwhile I've gathered some more information about the speakers in question.
The Orange cab says 200 w on a plate I guess
on the speaker itself # 12505 - 03/76
8 ohm
With 200 on the ID plate I assume that the speakers are 50 W each. No idea.
Anybody knows these speakers and can give me more info especially how the might sound like?

I opened the box today and thought that the magnets are pretty small compared to what I've seen on other photos of other fane speakers. Is there a way to tell them apart from Alnico magnets. Any rule of thumb what a smaller magnet can do other than a bi magnet. I'm pretty new to speakers so, please forgive my ignorance.

Those are ceramic. Alnico magnets usually have a much smaller diameter and are deeper. And, most of the time, the frame includes a protective bracket or cover (something more substantial than the plastic cap on Hiwatt Fanes, for example).GoldTopHeaven wrote:Is there a way to tell them apart from Alnico magnets.
The odds of someone having intimate experience with that particular model is pretty slim. Anecdotally, a friend of mine, who has since gone to the big Concert in the Sky, once told me the best cabinet he ever played through was an LA studio's vintage Fane-loaded Orange. He was one of the first AC30 re-adopters, so factor that into the equation.
