DR201 standby lamp voltage

Post by gtomax »

My early early DR201 ('69, chrome logo) has a super dim standby lamp. My assumption is that lamp is meant to run off the 220/240 mains so when on 115 it's half power/half brightness. Power lamp is full strength though.

The amp has no other issues, just thought I'd check in with any other 201 owners if they see the same on US voltage?

Nah. Neon bulbs just get dimmer with age.

The indicators are 220v and are connected to appropriate voltage internally (PT tap or internal voltage source) so they get the right voltage no matter what mains the amp is connected to. In a 201, the Standby indicator is wired across two internal DC voltages that are about 200 volts apart when the amp is running.

You might want to carefully remove and 'operate' on the indicator, as these are impossible to replace now. The neon bulb inside can be replaced, though.

Thanks Mark - I'd hate to ruin the amber tophat indicator so I'll probably leave it dim. I've got a spare NOS Radiospares red one but I've never seen another amber!
