What to do with a semi-shorted OT?
About a year ago I scored a 1979 DR103 (w/Canadian importer mod) that apparently had a blown OT. But when I got it home it not only worked it sounded amazing!!! Although having played it for almost a year now I've come to the conclusion it is lacking a few SPL. With some help from a friend I've removed the importer mod, done a cap job, and changed the preamp to early 70's specs. This got rid of the fizzy sounding gain in the preamp and made the overall tone much closer to a 4-holer. Also changed the 5 diodes and mains switch which gave the amp a little more juice. I've even done the bias mod and set it up to run 6550's (which sound awesome by the way!). Had a fellow forum member interested in buying it, but after setting it up for 6550's I definitely knew it should be louder. It probably is the holey grail for somebody out there... a Hiwatt you can dime and not go entirely deaf. While I have never played through an attenuator the best description I can give about the sound is that the volume is being attenuated by about 20-25%. I really didn't want to accept that the problem was in the output tranny but my friends and I have gone through everything else it could be... so what to do now? I'll be replacing it with a Heyboer as soon as I sell some pedals to pay for it. But what to do with the original? Is there a chance anyone in North America could rewind it and if so who?
