List your favorite Hiwatt "Artists"

Post by JC103 »

A little fun for the weekend, list your favorite Hiwatt "Artists".

First and foremost, the Hiwatt holy trinity: Dave, Daphny, and Buster! :D

And Runners up:

David Gilmour
Tommy Bolin
Robert Fripp

former HIWATT Artist - Alex Lifeson

Although I understand there was a vintage DR103 (owned by the producer) used at times during the recording of "Snakes & Arrows"... along with an assortment of other amps.

And Pete!!!! What about Pete? Former user, sadly.

Jeff Beck briefly used a Hiwatt during the Jeff Beck Group phase. Ice Cream Cakes, Going Down, New Ways/Train Train... 8)

+1 Robert Fripp

Not the best picture and, perhaps, not up to some virtuoso standards, but Dave Davies sure cranked out some British pop/rock through his Hiwatt:

P.S. Add Phil Manzanera in his Roxy Music era to the list.

Besides usuall suspects and Aleksandar Živojinović from RUSH I would point toward Radomir Mihajlović-Točak from SMAK.

Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. He kind of has a Pete Townshend obsession of his own.

Pearl Jam is what baited me on the whole Hiwatt thing. After them, I'd probably then say Gilmour, Townshend, Nic Cester (Jet the Band). I'd include Green Day too but I think they mostly just use them in the studio to mix things up every once and a while.

That's cool. I didn't know they were a Hiwatt band. Did they use them in the studio too or just live?

Haven't dug that deep into Kinksology. Just saw them live 3 or 4 times (hey, it was the 70's ;) !).

They certainly toured with Hiwatts for awhile. A Vox AC30 formerly owned by Dave Davies did pass through ebay several months ago and was said to have been used on some significant recordings.

For me, Townshend is definitely #1. That sound, particularly around '69-'70 with the SG Special is a defining sound in my head. Anyone know which type of speakers would work best for that crunchy, defined, sizzling tone?

#2 is Jimmy Page, '69-'71. I have the right amp for that sound. Huge, thumping, throaty...but with that classic Hiwatt "krrrang".

#3 is Martin Barre...that's *screaming* Hiwatt tone right there.

#4 would have to be David Gilmour. As much as I love Pink Floyd and his playing, for tone alone I'd rate the other mentioned above him.

Wow...I like it!! Serbian? They definitely have that 70s EuroProg vibe. Some of the riffs remind me a bit of PFM. 8)

However, I saw a Marshall head and Orange bottom -- where's the Hiwatt?

I guess he had a huge selection of equipment :P

Apparently he used Hiwatt, Vox, Marshall, etc. but for live it's said that he used a Hiwatt DR103 and a Marshall Superlead. I cannot confirm that as I've never seen them live. They're still around, though! 8)
