HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
Not all celestions sound good espacialy the new ones , but I found four
Celestions Pre-Rolas G12M 75hz in a homemade cab and with my DR 103 ,it sound's pretty good !
Of course these are very good and creamy speakers so it's not hard to make them sound good with
almost anything including a Hiwatt . This cab is about 4 feet next to my Hiwatt 4x12 loaded with Fanes
and one compliments the other ,my Hiwatt cab sounds round and full with creamy highs and the Rola cab sound's
a little more spiky but not harsh ,both have something that the other one does'nt.Together ,they totaly Rock!
I also have four Pre-Rolas G12H 75hz that are waiting to be put in a cab .
I will keep my Fane cab with my DR103 and respect the Hiwatt tradition and signature but!
I will have two cabs loaded with the Pre-Rolas to go with my future 1969 spec SAP with KT-88's that someone here
or near me will build for me in a near future! Any opinions on Hiwatt with old Celestions ?
I guess they would sound awesome with a JP amp!
One day ,I will post some clips and stop talking!!!

Re: HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
Hi something similar
i've just recently acquired some pre rola celestion greenbacks 4 of em! in mint cond.
date codes......
LC20
LC30
LC23
BD17
still in the original 4x12 cab they came in, never bin taken out, when i opened up cab to have a look i think i'm the 1st to do so since it left the factory! all the bits are all there. sound fffffffffin amazing! so clear an then when u turn up the amp ('72 dr103) they start a slight break up, groovey. compared to my other cab that i normaly use with goodman audiom 60's they sound similar (goodmans, slightly bassier/fuller, the 1's i prefer anyway) with the goodmans u can go all the way up to11! the greenbacks start to breakup a lot earlier on.
sorry no pics havnt got a camara.
so what do u think? i'm no expert on this type of speaker, but i do no there prob wortha bit! has any1 out there got any info about the greenbacks or the goodmans for that matter?
thanks

You DO know that your DR103 will cook that quad of Greenbacks in short order if you turn it up (with just the one cab), right?hohohiwatter wrote:an then when u turn up the amp ('72 dr103) they start a slight break up
160+ watts of DR power + 80-100 watt cab = that funky aroma of burnt electronics

Reminds me of a saying from an old (and I DO mean OLD) friend of mine. He and his brother used to beat the family car until they'd turn to each other and say; "There's that smell again!".mikhailwatt wrote:that funky aroma of burnt electronics
Amusing when it's someone else's car - not so much when it's vintage speakers .

i'm only turnin it up to about 10to/5to they do sound really good but the goodmans sound better an they can handle the power, so i only have to drag the 1 cab to gigs!
oh by the way i wonder if any1 can help? i have the opportunity of gettin hold of 4 sound city fanes r they the same as the hiwatt 1's of the same era? the fella said they were '70/71 cast frames. he said they need recones cause they all have slight holes an little rips etc, but he said the bloke doin the recone is a pro an used to work at the old fane factory an has some of the old cone material! he sent me a couple of pics. how do u put pics up?

Re: HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
Not exactly the same, as Dave Reeves did a lot of R&D with Fane before arriving at the official "Hiwatt Fanes". But, they're probably pretty darn good - provided they were intended for bass or guitar useage.hohohiwatter wrote:i have the opportunity of gettin hold of 4 sound city fanes r they the same as the hiwatt 1's of the same era?
If they only have a few small rips, DO NOT RECONE THEM! Small rips can be carefully repaired and preserving the original cones is paramount.hohohiwatter wrote:the fella said they were '70/71 cast frames. he said they need recones cause they all have slight holes an little rips etc, but he said the bloke doin the recone is a pro an used to work at the old fane factory an has some of the old cone material!
If this guy really has old Fane kits, you'd be doing the Vintage Hiwatt Community a huge favor by introducing him to us! Seriously - I'd love to meet someone who has NOS parts and that kind of experience.

If they are on a web server, just put the link inside [ i m g ] [ / i m g ] tags (removing the spaces).

Re: HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
yeh they r bass/guitar 1's i think with 17000 guasss rating, model number 12287, 15ohms, 150w power handling, '71/72? which is what it sez on the label on the photo these r the only photos i have at the mo i have asked him for some of the cones etc, waiting.
just spoke to him on the phone he sez that he will send more pics hopefully tomoro, the speaker with its cone shown has had a recone an is a demo of what it looks like for another customer, they really r past the point of repair he says, more than just a few little rips. the guy thats going to do it for him, sorry didnt work for fane but did in the 70's (still does?) for an audio recone company an has some of the original 70's fane recone materials.
i mean to me as long as the speaker is efficiant an does what its supposed to, an can handle me dr103 thats all that matters right?!

Re: HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
Those should sound very good, if properly reconed.
They have got to be 50 watt, not 150 watt speakers. I'm guessing that was just a "tick" in front of the "50". Still, a quad will take a DR103 just fine.

I agree, the magnets are not large enough too be 100 watts, let alone 150 watts.

My Sound City Fanes are 122190's, also from '71. They've got 14,000 gauss magnets and are rated at 40 watts.Dr.HIWATT wrote:I agree, the magnets are not large enough too be 100 watts, let alone 150 watts.

Re: HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
ok cheers guys, i'll wait for the pics he's gonna send me an an have a look, an post them here for u guys to have alook 2. i agree 150w seems excessive, an they look the same as all the other fane 50w's.
so with the 17000 gauss rating i take it that means it can take a bit more? cause they were an all round speaker prob used for bass more?
an really what is the difference between these an the hiwatt fanes? they look exactly the same! i have read some where on this great forum that DR helped fane develope the hiwatt branded fanes, but shurly it looks to me like he sed to them this is what i want, in this price range, what can u give me? an then slapped a hiwatt sticker on the back? i dont want to upset any1 here, cause u all seem to worship DR an rightly so cause i have discovered that my recently accquired DR103 is the best soundin head i've ever owned (an i've owned quite a few over the yrs lookin forthe perfect tone, which i think i have now found!) but at the end of the day i think DR was just a buisnessman, an we all no what that envolves, we all have a love of music gear, he had a love of cars, so i think he was just supporting his family an keeping his hobby going, whilst trying to keep a good reputation in the amp buisness, which he certainly did very well. i'm sure theres more to it than that, but that could be the jist of it.
well thats my theroy anyway! open to discussion!

Re: HIWATT WITH PRE-ROLAS
I have had the same hopes when purchasing gear that was close to what I wanted. The HIWATT Fanes were carefully selected by DR. I have no doubt that your new to you Fanes will sound good, but unless they were made to the HIWATT spec and accidently mislabelled at Fane the odds are incredibly small that those are the exact same speaker.

so what r u saying he went to the factory an sed i'll have those those an those please? The HIWATT Fanes were carefully selected by DR
an what is the hiwatt spec? i'm sure fane wood've loved to of marketed their speakers as the best, loudest, clearest etc isnt that what speaker companys did in those days, "get our speaker it sounds the clearst an doesnt distort, will reacrete ur sound perfectly with no colouration etc"
did fane not give that spec to other companys as well? an just relable them?
