Managed to sneak some time tonight to hastily mount DR-F #1/100 into my '79 SA212, right along side one of the vintage Hiwatt Fanes it was modeled after. Cobbled up the wiring, 'cause there was no time to get the soldering gun. Note to buster: Solder may not be glue, but tape IS tape :) .

Anyway, I got a bit of a hum through the speakers, but no guitar signal. Checked all the tubes for seat and tried again. Pretty much the same thing. Then, with the tube shields off, I gazed up into the chassis to see if everything was glowing. The Phase Inverter was not. Hmmmm. Shut down the amp again, pulled that tube and this is what I found:

Tube flashing isn't supposed to be milky white, is it :( ? A moment of silence was observed for the dearly departed Mullard ECC81. Not wanting to gamble one of my NOS CV4024's in an amp that I already know needs work, I threw a JJ ECC83S in and fired it up. Eureka! SOUND!

Of course, by the time all this was done, it was too late to bring the amp much beyond bedroom volumes. Still, the two speakers sounded great together! Will have to hammer it tomorrow (time permitting), when I can push the power a bit. The amp does need some TLC, so it's not performing at full song. Will be by the Vintage Hiwatt Convention, though  !

Sorry to report, that tube has 'joined the choir invisible.' :(

Milky white always means a gas leak, typically a crack in the envelope or a leak around one of the of the pins on the bottom. White is the color of oxidized silver flashing.

the day has finally arrived. the UPS driver stopped me in passing to let me know the box i had warned him about [yesterday] was here. i thought he was joking when he said it had a rather large hole in it and i needed to look at it prior to signing for it. well he wasnt joking this time.

upon inspection, everything appeared to be alright. i signed for it and off he went. the box was removed, cab unpacked (for the most part) and everything was oogled over. the hole was damage to the shipping box only, however on the back bottom edge of the cab there were 2 indentations (see picture). not really a big deal as they are on the back side and besides, they give it character. Clayton was even nice enough to include one of those bad ass HI-TONE amplification stickers. :D

5pm couldnt come fast enough. as i type, resting comfortably downstairs in my noise room sits the HI-TONE DR103 half stack, "Deuces Wild". tone wise, i could not have asked for anything more. i plan on picking up my sound city cab fitted with VP's tomorrow afternoon for a good side-by-side comp test. it will be fun indeed. i'll keep everyone posted.

as for now, ENJOY THE PICS and have a happy and safe 4th of July.

Prototypes for the next model have been broken in and jammed through.

Based on a broken in 1972 HIWATT Fane #122142
The DR-F '142
Initial impression:
Big, Bold and Powerful.

These prototypes will be demo'd at the Convention
Feedback will be appreciated and considered when tweaking for our final model.
