A somewhat trivial topic perhaps, but I was wondering if the salt and pepper basket weave cloth used on early/mid 70's Hiwatt cabinets is the same as used on late 60s/early 70's Marshall cabinets. I have owned both and have noticed that the orientation of the cloths is 90 degrees different from Hiwatt to Marshall. Oddly as well, the Marshall cloth has a very distinctive "smell" that I did not notice on the Hiwatt grillls.
I've recently gotten a Marshall Class 5 amp and that S&P grill cloth smells the same as the 1972 stack I owned. The cloth also seems a slightly different shade (new Class 5 is slightly "yellower", 70's Hiwatt SA212 and 4122 cab is "grayer"- aged?)
Maybe after you've stopped laughing at this somewhat silly topic, you could reply with any known info you have about the Hiwatt, Marshall S&P cloth differences.

The marshall S&P is the same material. Like all fabric there can be slight differences in tint between batches.
