...and what rough BEAST, it's hour come round at last
...slouches toward Minnesota to be born?
Yeats may have anticipated the second coming--but he had no idea of the pure devastation that is the Hi-Tone DR201 SAP.
Dude. Is pretty much all I have to say: Dude.
Pretty much the ultimate amp, imho. it has all the power (and more) any dictator would ever need, but it also sounds fantastic at lower levels with the master down. it has all the Hiwatt cleans you could ever want, but it also is capable of over the top Hiwatt overdrive. it's capable of getting dirtier than my 4-holer 50 watt. the boost switch is such a nice feature--it basically makes the amp like a switchable 2 channel hiwatt: hiwatt cleans, hiwatt overdrive at the click of a switch. you can set the balance so when you kick in the boost there's both a significant gain (distortion) boost and significant volume boost--or you can set it so there's pretty much just a gain boost (or anywhere in between).
The KT88's sound amazing--more full bodied sounding than the typical EL34 hiwatt (which obviously sound full bodied, but almost sound a little midrangey in comparison).
Couldn't be happier with this puppy. Honestly I think more guitar players should consider this amp, don't let the 200 watts scare you away--you can dial it back. but if you want huge cleans (for a pedal platform) it's got it--and if you want gnarly hiwatt overdrive, it's got that too.
also--it's a piece of artwork:
Thanks Clayton!!
I promise I will post some clips soon--maybe i'll get some time this weekend.
in the meantime, have a look at this wall-o-devastation:

So, on the HI-TONE website, it mentions a "different" tone stack. Can either of you gents speak to how it's different (preferably, from a results standpoint as opposed to technically)?Dr.HI-TONE wrote: I think these might be my favorite amp now too.

without getting too technical, the tone stack is closer to a 1960's Marshall/Fender tone stack than the classic "DR" tone stack.
the PI is classic 1960's DR PI.
You'll have to check it out at the Convention.
You'll be able to A/B it to the classic '201

I notice it seems to have more pronounced low end. Not sure if that's due to KT88's vs. EL34 or the tone stack. Otherwise, got to say that it still sounds very much like a hiwatt--and if I wasn't told about the different tone stack, I wouldn't have noticed.

oh yeah, it is still very much a Dave Reeves amp, but it isn't your Grandmother's '201

Guess an A/B test would be the way to say for certain. FWIW, my (grandmother's ) DR201 w/ KT88's has a BIG, ROUND bottom .Hiwatt Bob wrote:I notice it seems to have more pronounced low end. Not sure if that's due to KT88's vs. EL34 or the tone stack.

you are right Dave,
one could say this or that, or use a number of descriptive terms, but nothing is more valuable than getting your hands on one and A/Bing them.
Keep in mind that this thing is a 200+ watt lead guitar amp where the '201 is an AP amp. both are great, just different in some way.

Let's give credit where credit is due.
Uncle Dave really did it. I just reproduced and made available one of the "Baddest amps on the planet"
But I appreciate it Cody!
I am willing to bet almost anything, that you will want one of these.
I am a little worried about having you and HI-TONE Bob ( ) in the same building.

so I did a demo vid--it's uploading to youtube right now, I will post it later. in the meantime, I did set up a mic (sennheiser e609) and here's the dry recording. I apologize, there's some silent parts where i'm talking on the vid. but I think it shows how awesome this amp is:

The last bit with the input volume and balance both "dimed" is just incredible!
Tone of the Gods.
