DR201 Cap Job

Post by ThunderOne »

I finally decided that changing those 1971 caps might be a good idea. Actually, it was a VERY good idea. Good ole DR201 never sounded as lively. Probably the way she sounded 38 years ago. I'm particularly impressed with the tone section. Is there another amp make out there which even comes close? I think not! Trying all combinations of tone shaping, I was awestruck with one where I had norm preamp dimed, brill at 1 o'clock, bass dimed, others around 12 o'clock and chunking heavy chords on the lower notes, I could actually still hear those low notes instead of just feeling a low end rumble typical of most amps. This amp is a source of perpetual amazement. I kept the original caps. They still work and I'm not looking to make money off them but if someone needs or wants them for a restoration project or for archeological motives, I could sell them for what they're worth, which I have no idea thereof... :)

Nice work!

Yes, the Hiwatt circuit is one that is happy with fresh caps, because the attributes that good filtering bring are complimentary to the Hiwatt sound. 8)
