BEST BOOSTER FOR HIWATT's ?

Post by louis »

I Love the Kerrang sound of my Hiwatt and also like when it's pushed a little !

Problem is that the tone changes when I boost the signal with a pedal ,
too much mids or too much highs or compession .I would like a pedal that would push
the amp without changing the tone .

Any opinions on a good booster that would mate with a Hiwatt ?

Thank's!.......................Louis

Fulltone FatBoost 3
Fulltone OCD v.4

Both fairly neutral-sounding when used for a clean-ish boost.

The FB3 doesn't have as much boost, but it pushes just enough. Volume high, drive about halfway.
The OCD has a lot more boost potential, volume about two-thirds to three-fourths, drive low on the LP setting.

I've tried a TS-808 clone to good effect with single-coils, not so much with humbuckers. Definitely not a neutral pedal.

Thank's MIK !.......Is there some compression on the OCD or it sounds open ?

I had a Fulltone Fulldrive once and it was too much compressed so I'm afraid to get a Fulltone now.

Sounds open to me, as long as you keep the drive down. It's nice as an overdrive too, but I don't use it that way.

Mark has some OCD + DR103 clone clips on his site.

The FB3 sounds like the amp, but more. It was designed to push the front of a vintage amp.

D*A*M Red Rooster germanium booster. There may be a long wait-list for buying one new.

Hi
Checkout Youtube clips by a chap callled Clyde67. He uses a booster for his DR504. Check out his Young Lust clip especially and read the discussion thread about that clip. He uses a boost to produce breakup, pretty well in my opinion.
I have tried a ButlerTube Driver on low gain as a boost with some success and its brilliant for dirt as well.

Here is something I think would probably work good with a Hiwatt, doesn't color the tone too much ,
it's rich and full and based on an Echoplex Pre-amp circuit.
Let me know what you guys think!

Mikhail....think that your Fat boost would be a very good choice also without changing the tone color.

i usually run a dha vt1 valve overdrive with a ecc82 (for milder drive) set so the vol is the same but so it just adds a slighly thicker bit of ovdr crunch (really nice n warm) in2 a byoc tri booster in2 a carl martin hydra boost. i use the tri boost mainly for the treble boost, but the carl martin hydra boost, i find is a great boost, no colouration just gives u what u've already got but more louderer! (upto 22db, i think) an of course the more u boost it will add a bit more crunch, but no eq that i can hear.
give it a go i picked mine up 2nd hand off the bay for about 45/50quid a couple of yrs ago. oh an its also about the size of a phase 90, mabe slightly smaller.
U CANT BEAT A DR103 THRU AN SE4122 ON FULL TITS! BREAKOUT THE DEFAID!
