70ies HIWATT cab. Metric threads for speaker bolts?

Post by GoldTopHeaven »

Hi everybody, I have this 70es HIWATT cab that I'm going to stuff in some Fane speakers. The cab is empty and the bolts to attach the speakers are missing. There's just the thread inserts left in the front panel. I wonder if it is metric or if i would have to look for some brit size bolts. Anyone knows?

Sad to admit, by my similar cab is inside a flight case, in storage at the moment :( .

I've not seen a port arrangement like yours before. Here's what my 81-ish cab looks like:

If you have a 1/4" x 20 bolt laying around, I'd give that a try in the T-nuts before shopping for something more exotic. That's just from eye-balling the pic, though.

Thing is, I moved to an other home and all my tools , U.S. standart nuts and bolts are in a storage. I'm located in Germany, so I'd have to shop from some specialty shop, but since I can't just carry the cab around I'll have to shop by guessing, which I actually hate. The source I know has quite a few nuts in bolt non metric but they're stainless and expensive. I just can't afford buying a huge can of useless nuts and bolts only to possibly find out that they don't fit. But looks like there is no other way. I#m gonna throw the cab into my station wagon and see how fa I get with my shopping. I was hoping s.o. in this forum would know what they are like,....so I remain patient. It's Saturday anyway, so.....;)

Good afternoon...

I'd measure the diameter of the thread and look for the nearest 'BA' bolt as a first choice. I'd guess 2BA, a common British bolt (British Association...) used for many years, and rife in the '60s/'70s. Good luck.

Feel around for a loose T-nut (odds are that at least ONE of them is...) and pop it out from the front, with a small screwdriver and (gentle) hammer taps.

Much easier to take the T-nut with you shopping than the cab - or to rely upon "educated" speculation :) .

When done, you can press and tap the T-nut back into place.

All right, finally got the correct bolts from a local hard ware store. Pulled out a receptacle and took it to the shop. Unfortunately they only had them in stainless steel. I was glad to get this UNFE in my city, so with a whopping 30 $ I took them home with the washers.
Anyway the right bolts to go with my cab's receptacles read 10-32-32
Thank you everybody for your kind assistance

Hmm,..I try to figure out how to mount the speakers. It seems like the front panel is not removable, so I was assuming that the speakers attach as front loaders. But when trieing to do so two things just seem wrong. First the bolt radius is larger on the cab than it is the case on the speakers and second, I wonder how a speaker would damppen since the outer rubber ring of my FANE speakers would be in the front towards the outside of the cab. Any ideas how to deal with that?
