the mongrel quad is complete
A nice pair of '72 122142 Fanes is on its way from the UK.
Now all the drivers in Old #6494 will have at least have matching stickers.
Anyone have an empty SE412x (rear loader) they want to part with? My Weber Thames need a new home.

Well done!
I've got a Hylight front-loader that's been stripped of tolex and painted black (no grill panel, but I have another one from which a template could be made).
Let me know if you need another project .

I'm allergic to front-loaders.OldSchoolDave wrote:I've got a Hylight front-loader
Too bad, I like the occasional project and there's a yard of S&P cloth sitting in my closet doing nothing.

They have meds for that .mikhailwatt wrote: I'm allergic to front-loaders.
No problem. It'll keep my other front-loader company for a bit longer.

Matching stickers sound better

They're here.
I've never seen a 122142 up close until now - interesting, no plastic cover like the 122231, but a much larger magnet (that much I knew) with the sticker applied directly to it. Hopefully I'll find some time this week to load them up...

Re: the mongrel quad is complete
I've seen pics of the direct-applied stickers before. Must have been a change somewhere along the line. I've got a quad of STAMPED frame 122142's and they have black plastic magnet covers. Will be interesting to find if you hear a difference between the models.mikhailwatt wrote:They're here.

More pics...
Different sons of the same mother...
However... after auditioning them together, my son and I agreed that the 122142s overwhelm the 122231s, they're a bit louder and a little harder sounding in the upper mids. Really punchy, though. EQ-ing doesn't really help - when you dial in the 122142 you lose tone on the 122231.
The Thames are a better fit, so I'll keep the 122231s in Old #6494 with a pair of Thames on the bottom. The 122142s will go in the Reeves cab with another set of Thames on the bottom. Then if I'm running both heads, I can eq them differently to complement the different Fanes.

Well, in case you want to go the other direction, there's another pair of 122142s on ebay (item 220272706312 - no relation). Pretty steep price, though .mikhailwatt wrote:However... after auditioning them together, my son and I agreed that the 122142s overwhelm the 122231s, they're a bit louder and a little harder sounding in the upper mids. Well, you got a deal! And, whoever bites on the BIN won't. Somewhere in between is fair market value, IMHO.mikhailwatt wrote: Steep indeed... mine were less than half that BIN.

Re: the mongrel quad is complete
Traded (somewhat reluctantly) the perfect pair of 122142s for a nearly perfect pair of 122231s... not only do the purple stickers match, now the model numbers match.
Just a couple months newer than the old '71
Matching original cone codes
Sounds just like it should
