As Dr.Hiwatt said, there are no wrong answers .

You'll need to try them and determine which is better for YOU.

I've always leaned toward "bassier" speakers (55Hz Celestions, 122142 Fanes, 15" JBL's, etc.) for guitar. But that's just me - and its a preference that's developed over years of playing. Gotta find your own voice!

Do you think that should be better to found an 122231 Fanes loaded cab to try instead of the 122142 one?..ore the 122231 are just similiar to the 122190?

To my ears:

The 122231 (found in the earlier SE4123 "LEAD" cabs) has a great, complex, "woody" midrange quality. Plenty of bass and smooth high end. Perfect with a HIWATT.
The 122142 (found in the earlier SE4122 "LEAD & BASS" cabs) is similar, but has more low end punch and perhaps a bit more "crispiness" in the high end. A little less focused in the midrange.

They are both excellent. I tend to prefer the 122231 for guitar, but lately I've been experimenting with the best of both worlds by running an SE4122 and an SE4123 together. Oh yeah!

I've never auditioned any Sound City Fanes, but my guess is that they would be somewhere in the ballpark of a HIWATT/Fane with similar cone and magnet types. As others have said, you have to let your ears decide what works best for you.

this is a good explanation for me, I think I'll have to try the 122231 first as they seems to be perfect in the tonal tange of the electric guitar..

Are the 122231/122142 the same wattage? If yes, I could consider an Hybrid cab with two of each type..

My answer is "it depends". The earlier the Sound City then the greater the chance that the speaker was very similar if not the same. There is a model that DR had a hand in the design of that I have seen in SC and HIWATT SE4122 cabs. This is the 17,000 gauss, 50 watt, 15 ohm speaker. They are an outstanding speaker

Might this be the one? Anyone want to take a guess at the age/vintage of this cab?

Bump, as I'd love to know if these speakers are worth my consideration. I'm trying to slowly assemble a Townshend@Leeds kind of setup, and if these are similar to the speakers used in 4122 cabs around '68-'69, they might be a good candidate? Furthermore, is that grille cloth similar to the herringbone on the pre-70s Hiwatt cabs?

that cab looks like '69-70ish...It is hard to really pinpoint.

I would get it just for the "rock and roll circus" mojo.

I would think it should sound good as long as the speakers have no problems.

Actually I'm shooting for a Rock 'n' Roll Circus kind of vibe as the amp I'm planning to build is a SC105, but possibly with a Hiwatt badge or even no badge...exactly like at the RNRC.

The cone codes are 1 x 102 006 and 3 x 102 012. I recognize the 102 00x type from Celestions of the period (003 is a 75hZ resonance cone, and 014 is a 55Hz version). I would have to ssume these are original cones, but what does that make of these speakers? The cab isn't super-cheap, so if I spring for it I want to know I'm getting something that might nail the Live at Leeds tone.
