Re: my baby its finally in my hands...

Well congratulations. I've been casually looking, but you've got to be pretty quick on the draw these days with you guys in "buy mode".

This looks like a fun project that will yield serious tone rewards. Nice job and thanks for posting to photos of your progress.

Re: #6753 comes home Sunday

Oh, regarding the cloth. It does not look like painted basketweave to me. I think it is their origial black. I've been looking for some but to date no one has identified an exact match to it. If anyone knows where I could get a couple yards that would be cool.

Re: #6753 comes home Sunday

Having several Marshall bottoms, I would most certainly say that you got the best end of that deal. The old Marshalls are quite nice as well but the 900's are $400+ all day long. Still great cabs but readily available.

Re: Fane/sound

My Fanes sound a bit darker than a greenback. I have a '77 Marshall cab with blackbacks that is the ultimate "go to bottom. My '78 Hiwatt bottom has incredible low end and and sounds darker unitl the volume gets up there, then the high end comes out. The do have less breakup. I don't have vinat...

Those cabs are just a work of art. That is a very nice find. That one in Chicago is tempting, but I have some other stuff on the list.

Re: Preamp Tubes for 2-hole 1979 DR-103?

I have a '78 DR103 canadian import that has had the canadian mod removed by Mark H. I have 4 Mullard ECC83 in my preamp and 4 Siemens EL34 in the power section. I think that the Mullards are a key element in the Hiwatt tone, (and the Marshall tone for that matter).

Re: A face only a mother could love...

Well in that case,....enjoy. Looking forward to hearing what your plans are for the cab. A very nice find. I passed on a cab in WI a couple months ago. It was loaded with,.....mojo speakers. nice cab, but alas, the mighty fanes were absent.

DR103 Re-tube

I just retubed my '78 DR103 with Siemens EL34 and some Mullard ECC83 that I had. It does seem to be quite well balanced and clear. It's so amazing just how right those guys got these amp and tube designs. For good tone to be appreciated 30,40, and 50 years later is most impressive. I am a bit curiou...

Re: show me your Hylight cabs

I like to see those well broken in cabs. I went to see one locally last week that was pretty beat, but the speakers were, well, not original. I decided to keep looking, that's most of the fun anyway.

Re: New How-to Pages

Many thanks Mark. The new page is great! I'm sure many will benefit from your analysis and corrections to the circuit. Of the 16,000 odd Hiwatts made, I'd think there is a significant number of Canadian Distributor mod amps and even more with the Fizzy issue that can now sound much better. Typically...
